Understanding Cash Runway

What is Cash Runway?

Cash runway is the amount of time your startup can operate before running out of money. It's calculated by dividing your current cash balance by your net burn rate (expenses minus revenue). This is one of the most critical metrics for startup survival.

Key Concepts:

  • Burn Rate: How much cash you spend each month
  • Net Burn: Monthly expenses minus monthly revenue
  • Gross Burn: Total monthly expenses (regardless of revenue)
  • Runway: Months until cash runs out at current burn rate

When to Fundraise:

  • Start fundraising when you have 9-12 months of runway
  • Raising capital typically takes 3-6 months from start to close
  • Never let runway drop below 3 months (emergency zone)
  • Factor in unexpected expenses and revenue delays

How to Extend Runway:

  • Reduce operating expenses (renegotiate contracts, cut non-essentials)
  • Increase revenue (sales focus, price increases, upsells)
  • Delay hiring or freeze non-critical positions
  • Switch to more cost-effective tools and services
